This green heart of Italy holds attractions for all types of visitor and the aim of “The Umbrian Collection” is to bring a different piece of Umbria to each and every guest. From horse-riding to wine-tasting, cookery courses to art galleries, Umbria tempts with a host of distractions whilst also allowing one just to relax - around a lake, perhaps, or beside a pool in the garden.

Most of the villas and converted farmhouses featured in the following pages are located in Val di Chiana and the Niccone Valley, near Lake Trasimeno. Historic Trasimeno is the fourth largest lake in Italy, located idyllically amidst gentle hills where woodlands alternate with fields of maize and sunflowers, vineyards and stretches of olives. The options here are plentiful: watersports, bird watching, lake cruises and woodland walks, to name a few.

While Lake Trasimeno and Val di Chiana geographically (and culturally) straddle Umbria and Tuscany, the towns of Spello, Foligno and Gubbio represent the true heart of Italy. Founded long before Rome, Gubbio is one of Italy’s oldest settlements and Spello, with its narrow streets and alleyways, is full of historical sites. Here, once a year, the grey cobblestones are ablaze with colour, as local artists create magnificent paintings on the streets.
