Il
Palazzo
Il Palazzo
was originally the main olive mill in the village of Lisciano Niccone
in the Tuscany/Umbria border region.
Today there
are 3 charming apartments and a restaurant in the cantina of the
main building and 2 further apartments in a converted barn.
The three
story building can be approached from two directions. In the 1st
picture, the drive brings you to the ground floor which is a small
restaurant serving Sardinian cuisine. The cook is the owner of Il
Palazzo. The balcony with flowers on the first floor is private
to apartment 3.
Approaching
from the other side of the building, up a steep drive, you arrive
at a courtyard with the owners' house on the right. Apartments 1
and 2 are on the left with separate outdoor furniture and this is
the top floor of Il Palazzo. The 10m pool is on this level in another
part of the property.
Apartments
1 and 2 have a large dining/living room with a kitchen
corner; a double bedroom, a bathroom with shower. There is a sofa
bed in the main room. Apartment 2 also has a child's bed in the
bedroom and a washing machine
in the kitchen. Both apartments have a table and parasol in the
peaceful courtyard. (For apartment 1, laundry can be given to the
owner.)
Apartment
3 has a living/dining room, kitchen with washing machine;
L-shaped double bedroom with additional bunk beds; a double bedroom
with cot and child's bed; a bathroom
with tub and shower, another cloakroom with WC and basin.
Apartment
4 is similar to 1 but with its own private terrace and
satellite TV
Apartment
5 has two double bedrooms, two bathrooms, one en suite,
and a third small bedroom with full size bunks. Large well furnished
living room with fitted kitchen(dishwasher, washing machine fridge/freezer,
oven, hobs) sitting and dining areas. Small garden with outside
dining furniture. Satellite TV.
Il Palazzo
is on the edge of the village and it is also a short walk to the
other village, Mercatale di Cortona. There are other restaurants
in both villages.
There are
cafes, supermarkets, banks, post offices etc despite the fact that
the villages themselves are very small.
It is a
quiet area. In fifteen minutes you can be at Lake Trasimeno and
on your way to Siena, Montepulciano, Florence etc. In the other
direction lie Assisi, Gubbio, Perugia.
All around
are wonderful old hill towns dating back to thirteenth and fourteenth
century (that's the newer ones) set in exceptional verdant scenery.
The main
line station at Terontola-Cortona is twenty minutes with direct
trains to Florence, Arezzo, Orvieto, Rome. Italian trains are generally
reliable, comfortable and inexpensive.
Fastest
trains: Florence 65 minutes, Rome 95 minutes.
